Camp’s story takes her to Washington

Concord resident Beth Camp recently realized a dream to go to Washington, D.C., but how she got there encompasses the journey of her life.

Camp was one of seven finalists in the Celebrating UC Success contest, sponsored by the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America and Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals. It was an essay contest program to honor, educate and inspire those affected by ulcerative colitis.

Hers was among 500 stories submitted. It was judged to be one of the most inspirational.

Camp was 11 when she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a disease which causes ulcers and irritation in the lining of the colon.

“I had lost a lot of weight. I had gotten puny,” she said. A battery of tests given at Egleston Hospital showed she had UC.

Her disease was so advanced that within a month of her diagnosis, she was hospitalized and receiving a unit of blood per day. Over a period of three months she received 62 blood transfusions.

“I was bleeding to death,” she said.

She was unable to eat and so weak she could not walk unassisted. She weighed just over 60 pounds when she was 12.

“My doctors felt surgery was the only option,” she wrote in her essay.

It took several surgeries to completely remove her large intestine and create a J-pouch. She said it took a year and a half of surgeries to “rework my plumbing and to put me back together again.”

She was the 13th person to have such surgery performed at Emory Hospital.

“We didn’t know what the future held,” she said. Doctors told her she would probably not be able to take part in sports activities. They said she would not be able to have a child.

The first Monday in April! I am so excited!

As you know, most individual's personal wealth is in their homes. So, take a minute and glance over the list below. Are you maintaining your biggest asset?

Spring tips
Replace your furnace filter
Clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter
Check your electrical system
Always have a multi-purpose fire extinguisher accessible.
Make sure the light bulbs in all your fixtures are the correct wattage- consider the newer low wattage bulbs
Review your fire escape plan with your family
Consider installing a lightning protection system on your home
Protect all your electrical appliances from power surges and lightning
Have a professional air conditioning contractor inspect and maintain your system as recommended by the manufacturer
Check for damage to your roof
Run through a severe-weather drill with your family
Repair all cracked, broken or uneven driveways and walks to help provide a level walking surface
Protect your home from sewer or drain back-up losses
Check all the fascia and trim for deterioration
Check your water heater
Check the shutoff valve at each plumbing fixture to make sure they function
Clean clothes dryer exhaust duct, damper, and space under the dryer
Replace all extension cords that have become brittle, worn or damaged
Inspect and clean dust from the covers of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

So much can be added to this list! I am a big "do it yourself" person! But, not everyone shares me zeal for cleaning. "An ounce of pervention is worth a pound of cure". With prices these days, who can say how much a "pound" will cost you in the future! Be pro-active.

Georgia FFA Gala ~ March 2008

Hi! I was honored to attend the Georgia FFA Gala held at the Georgia Aquarium im March. My husband is on the GA FFA Foundation Board this year and his company Southern States Cooperative sponsored a table.

The event was wonderful! The food was catered by Wolfgang Puck and the venue was just magical with the whales swimming around the ballroom. Too cool!

The best part of the evening was to be able to talk one on one with the FFA Officers. These kids are exceptional. They are articulate and driven to do well.

Governor Sonny Perdue was one of the dignitaries at this event. What a nice guy!

Okay- You may be asking, "what does this have to do with real estate?"

Everything!!!! Real estate is a dynamic industry. Realtors must know their communities and are often the first to volunteer to help a worthy cause. Ever wonder how so many Realtors know so many people? We are a part of the community in which we live.

I am so proud to be a part of the PTO at Pike Primary School, an axillary counselor at church, fundraiser at Century 21 Adams-Walker for Relay for Life (American Cancer Society), soccer mom, home supporter to my husband who is involved with multiple charity boards and events. I actually received a call tonight about a Special Olympics event that will be held at the Strickland Building in Concord Friday 4/5/08. If you want to know more, give me a call.

Nasty neighbors? Do you have to disclose?

In Georgia (where I am a licenced real estate sales person and member of NAR), there is not a question on the standard disclosure asking if you have nasty neighbors (yet anyway!) I was watching Good Morning America and saw this blip about a home with came with an unwanted pest- a nasty neighbor.

The Seller did not tell the Buyer he had serious issues with the neighbor. So the transaction took place and the new owner was so upset that he is suing the Seller for not disclosing this fact (they are in Arizona).

How exciting! I have been blogging at activerain.com for a few months, but decided I wanted to set up a blog specifically for people interested in the greater Griffin area.
